The LL.M. Finance program is specifically designed for graduates who already have a first degree in law, business or economics from an accredited or recognized university. Therefore, if you possess a first degree in any of these subjects and have outstanding academic records, we would be happy to receive your application. Previous professional experience is not a requirement.
We admit a mix of students with and without prior working experience who will equally benefit from the program.
We have both full-time and part-time students.
Since English is the sole language of instruction, you must have a good command of written and spoken English. Your proficiency in English must proven to surpass a level of TOEFL 600, CBT TOEFL 250, IBT TOEFL 100, Cambridge CAE (grade C or above) or IELTS 6.5 unless your native tongue is English or your first degree was taken in English.
The ILF limits its admissions to 50 students each year in order to ensure academic excellence and direct, personal contact between students and the faculty.
Duration of the Program

The LL.M. Finance program is a one-year postgraduate degree program. It is divided into two semesters, namely the winter semester (October to February) and the summer semester (April to July). The program commences in October and teaching ends in July of the following year. The Master’s Thesis is due in October. The program also includes a two-month internship which usually takes place in the break between the winter and summer semesters.
What if you want to study part-time?
Subject to the prior approval of the ILF, students may arrange to complete the regular one-year LL.M. Finance program over a period of two years. The purpose of such an arrangement is to allow students to work part-time during their studies, thereby financing their studies at the ILF.
If you decide to do the program on a part-time basis, you will be required to accumulate at least 60 credit points over a period of 2 years instead of 1 year. Of the 60 credit points, 40 credit points shall arise from the successful completion of ten 4-credits courses. This means that you will have to take at least 2 to 3 courses per semester in order to have 10 courses completed by the end of the 2 years' (or 4 semesters') period.
Depending on the scheduling of the individual courses selected by you, you will probably have to attend classes at least once a week for each course selected. If you continue working during your studies, you may request for an exemption of the internship requirement of the program regulations.
Students who have opted for a full-time program will not be allowed to switch to a part-time program after the start of the program.
Conferment of Degree and Accreditation
The LL.M. Finance Degree is conferred by the Faculty of Law of Goethe University Frankfurt am Main.
The Institute for Law and Finance and the LL.M. Finance degree are accredited by the ZEvA, Germany’s Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency. The ZEvA is a member of the European Network for Quality Assurance in Higher Education, ENQA, and participates in their Joint Quality Initiative (JQI) which has developed evaluation criteria for Bachelor and Master degrees at the European level. The ZEvA accreditation is based on internationally accepted standards of accreditation.
